The residents of Kungna-watta in Wattala have staged a protest against Colombo city garbage being dumped in the Muturajawela sanctuary.

Catholic priests in the area have also joined in the protest.

The Chairman of Evergreen Environment Organization B.I. Abdeen and JVP Provincial Councilor Mahinda Jayasinghe expressed their views during the protest.

Meanwhile President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed that a special gazette notification be issued to declare garbage disposal as an essential service.

Accordingly a gazette had been issued effective from last midnight under the Public Security Act Clause NO 16,  declaring garbage disposal by any authority of the Public Administration is an essential service.

This covers garbage disposal, garbage separation, transportation and storage.
