The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde said that the answer to the wave of populism gaining support in many countries was to work for "more growth and better growth" in the world economy.

She expressed these views during the discussions among global finance leaders representing the 189 countries that are members of the IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake is leading the Sri Lankan delegation.

Meanwhile, a discussion regarding obtaining a 1.5 Billion US Dollar loan from the IMF for Sri Lanka is also due to be held in Washington.

Analysts point out that Sri Lanka will need to present a strong case to relax certain conditions imposed by the IMF.
