It has been reported that the CID is enforcing the law and arresting individuals who commit sexual harassment through cyber space.

Moreover, its unit investigating computer crime has been provided with modern communication equipment to act immediately on related complaints, while currently, many complaints have been received and suspects have been arrested.

Objectives of the persecution

In line with complaints by civil society activists, the CID unit is investigative into private and obscene videos and pictures uploaded in the internet, mainly focusing married women and schoolgirls to beseech sexual or monetary bribes, or to insult them.

According to the CID, the 1927 act as amended in 2005, on obscene publications, prohibits the possession, circulation, production, importation or exportation of similar publications.

Moreover, it says that the penal code provides for the arrest of suspects without a warrant and to order a three month imprisonment or a fine, or both penalties.

In addition, if found guilty, a five year prison term and a compensation of several millions of rupees will be imposed.
