IUSF convener remanded until July 5th

IUSF convener Lahiru Weerasekera was remanded until the 5th of July when he was produced before Maligakanda Magistrate today.

Police headquarters stated that Weerasekera and another student of Moratuwa University were arrested by Maradana Police and Colombo Crime Division while the duo was leaving a media conference held in Maradana.

They have been accused of forcibly entering the Health Ministry premises and causing damage to public property.

In addition, convener of the IUSF monks’ federation Tampitiye Sugathananda Thera is receiving treatment at Colombo National Hospital under the custody of prison officials.

IUSF convened a media conference again after Weerasekera’s arrest.

Addressing the media, acting convener of the organization Mangala Maddumage said that their struggle cannot be stopped by suppressing student leaders.

Meanwhile, Professional Association for free education organized a protest march from Lipton Roundabout to the Health Ministry.

At the same time, Collective of Suwasiripaya Organization staged a protest against the IUSF invasion of the Health ministry.

Meanwhile, a group of students attached to Ruhuna University staged a protest in front of Ruhuna University today against the police attack on IUSF members inside the Health Ministry yesterday.

A tense situation erupted when several policemen disguised as journalists attempted to photograph protesting students.

Later a group of policemen in uniform intervened in the situation.

Furthermore, IUSF filed a petition today with the Human Rights Commission against the police attack unleashed on them yesterday.
