It seems that the decision to ban former Test cricketer Chamara Silva has been recommended by the Committee appointed to look into the controversial Tier B, first class match in Sri Lanka, without conclusive evidence.

In January 2017, the Tournament Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket after convening an emergency meeting decided to initiate an impartial inquiry into complaints from the match officials that there may have been foul play during the Panadura SC vs Kalutara Physical Cultural Club match played on the 25th of January, at the Surrey Village grounds in Maggona.

Panadura SC claimed their 5th win in the Tier B segment in this match.

The club, which won the toss and elected to bat first reached their target of 165 within just 13.4 overs.

It deprived Sri Lanka Ports Authority team to be promoted to the Tier A of the domestic league.

However, despite a seven-month inquiry the independent committee was not able to determine who made the decision to manipulate the result of that match.

Based on Committee recommendations, the SLC has punished the players of both the clubs.

The captains Chamara Silva (Panadura) and Manoj Deshapriya (Kalutara) have been banned from "cricket-related activities" for two years, while the other players have been served one-year bans.

However, there remains no clarity on who - if anyone - instructed the players to manipulate the result.

Addressing the media, at the SLC the head of the Inquiry Committee, Asela Rekawa said that they could not find any evidence to pinpoint any wrongdoer.

He said the players were given an opportunity make written submissions, if they had anything to say.

However, most of the players did not use that opportunity to personally defend themselves.

The inquiry had also found that Chamara was not in the field on the day that alleged incident had taken place as he was having a stomach ailment.

And yet, he has been handed the harshest sentence.
