England reached 196 for 4 at stumps on day 1 of 1st Ashes Test being played at Gabba.

Australia was able to claw back into the game by dismissing England skipper Joe Root who made 15.

Root was LBW off Pat Cummings.

Earlier in the day, England won the toss and opted to bat first.

Alistair Cook was the first to go. He was caught at first slip off Mitchell Starc for 2 in the 3rd over of the day.

First-drop batsman James Vince and opener Mark Stoneman had prospered against Australia's bowlers in a 125-run stand through an extended second session after the rain had arrived in the lunch interval.

It could have been two for Australia shortly before tea when Nathan Lyon, the best of the Australia bowlers, drew the edge from Vince only for the chance to come too quick for recalled wicketkeeper Tim Paine to snaffle.

Vince was on 68 at the time. He went on to make 83.

Stoneman made 53.

At stumps, Dawid Malan was 28 not out and Moeen Ali was 13 not out.

Cameron Bancroft made Test debut for Australia and he received his Baggy Green from former Test opener Geoff Marsh.
