Reports say that the President Maithripala Sirisena has requested the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to take a decision regarding the local government election results.

The statement was made during a discussion between the President and the Prime Minister at the President’s official residence last night.

It was made known that the meeting lasted over two hours.

While the President had said that it had become necessary for him to take a decision taking into consideration the people’s expectations and the results of the election, he had requested that the Prime Minister do so before him.

During the discussion, a proposal had been made for the government to be accepted with Speaker Karu Jayasuriya named as Prime Minister.

However, the discussion had ended without a consensus on the proposal.

On this occasion, the President had stressed that since the people had made a verdict, a suitable option was to dissolve parliament and hold a general election.

The Prime Minister had been requested to take a decision prior to finalizing their next move.

However, the Prime Minister’s faction had informed that to make a decision it was necessary that the UNP cabinet ministers hold a discussion with the President.

Meanwhile, a meeting between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP MPs was held last afternoon at Temple Trees.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Naveen Dissanayake said that if a problem surfaces with regard to the government continuing in the future, the UNP had the ability to form a new government.
