UNP CC approves new positions, Joseph Michael walks away in protest

UNP Working Committee has approved all the names proposed yesterday for UNP's new Politburo.
 
Meanwhile, former Minister Joseph Michael Perera who walked away from the meeting protesting against the appointment of Ravi Karunanayake as Assistant Leader said that he resigned from the  CC.

The UNP CC meeting began at 10.30 am. The changes to the party's top post were ratified here.

The UNP announced changes to top posts in the party yesterday (Apr. 25).
 
Accordingly, Minister of Higher Education and Highways, Kabir Hashim who previously held the office of General Secretary has been appointed as the Chairman of replacing Minister Malik Samarawickrama.
 
Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam who previously acted as the Deputy General Secretary of the party has been appointed as the General Secretary.
 
Minister of Plantation industries Navin Dissanayake is the National Organizer replacing Minister Daya Gamage and State Minister, Dr. Harsha de Silva was named the Treasurer of the party.
 
In addition, the Politburo decided to refrain from making changes to the positions of UNP leadership, Deputy Leader, and Assistant Leader.
 
Accordingly, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will continue to lead the party, while Minister Sajith Premadasa will remain as the Deputy Leader.
 
Former Minister, MP Ravi Karunanayake will continue to hold the post of Assistant leader of the UNP.
 
The UNP politburo convened last evening at temple trees, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
 
The meeting continued approximately for 2 hours.
