Concerns have arisen on continuing international cricket matches in future at the Galle international cricket stadium where Sri Lanka has recorded the highest wins in Tests.

A special discussion was held regarding the matter at the Ministry of Cultural Affairs yesterday (Jul 18) with the participation of the Archaeology Department, Urban Development Authority, Sri Lanka Cricket and the Galle District cricket administration in charge, Western Province Cricket Association Secretary Anura Weerasinghe.

However, the Ministry of Southern Development says that a decision has not yet been taken on removing the Galle international cricket stadium.

The Ministry added that the Galle cricket stadium is located near the Galle Dutch Fort which has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO and it has been constructed without the approval of a responsible authority.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Kamal Padmasiri noted that the final decision on the Galle Cricket stadium should be taken by the cabinet.

The initial proposal on the removal of the stadium is to be presented in December next year.

Further, a detailed discussion was held yesterday on the area in which the alternative stadium should be constructed if the Galle international cricket stadium is to be removed.

The Galle cricket stadium which received international status in 1998 has hosted 31 Test matches and 6 One Day Internationals since then.

Out of the 31 matches, Sri Lanka had secured victory in 18 Tests while 6 matches ended in draws.
