It has been confirmed that special police protection has been put in place around Galle International Cricket Stadium.

A senior police officer stated precautions have been taken to avoid any issues that might crop up while removing the buildings around the stadium.

Meanwhile, Galle Mayor Priyantha Sahabandu stated that a request was made to provide security considering the current situation.

Contrary to this, Galle International Cricket Stadium's Administrative Officer, Western Province Sports Association's Secretary Anura Weerasinghe revealed that although it was said that preparations were underway to demolish the building around the Galle International Cricket Stadium and reconstruct new buildings nearby, no such plans are still in place.

Similarly, replying to our query regarding those preparations the secretary said that the Urban Development Authority has no legal right to do so without a written notification.

The UNESCO had recently warned that due to several constructions put up in the Galle International Cricket Stadium, the Galle Fort would be removed from the World Heritage List.

Meanwhile, expressing his views on the situation Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath told the media that he was personally disappointed about it.
