Rains to recede from tomorrow

The Met Department stated that the current wet weather condition would recede from tomorrow.

Duty Meteorologist Shanika Dissanayaka stated that heavy rainfall, exceeding 100 millimetres can be expected in the Western, North-western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle & Matara districts.

The Disaster Management Center stated that at least 9 persons have died, and 57 thousand people in 12 districts have been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

National Building Research Organization has issued warnings of possible landslides for five districts owing to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.

Accordingly, the landslide warnings concerns several areas in Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Badulla and Kegalle districts.

President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a directive to provide necessary relief to people affected by the inclement weather.

At the same time, Education Minister, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated that the necessary power has been vested in Provincial and Zonal Directors whether to close schools in the disaster-affected areas in the island.
