The Mayor of Matale, Daljit Aluvihaarey has reportedly requested in writing that  former prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe hand over leadership of the UNP  to Deputy leader Sajith Premadasa.

In the letter,  titled , “Statement of Conscience”, 11 points have been presented, which include non-adaption of party leadership to Sri Lankan culture, failure to build a strong party machinery at ground level, as well as not informing the public regarding the Central Bank Bonds issue.

Additionally  the mayor addressed the  lack of action taken as the party’s Buddhist and rural vote base diminished significantly.

It was also stated  that there serious concern amongst party loyalists as to whether the current leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has lead  the party since 1994, is now in a position to provide stability to the party
