The department of archaeology has stated that an ancient cave discovered in Seerudandapola in the Matale - Naawula divisional secretariat is believed to fall under the category of limestone caves.

archaeologist, Mahinda Karunaratne from The Kandy district archaeology office, noted that following an inspection of the cave soil it was confirmed that the walls of the cave are limestone

He added that the limestone had formed within the cave, as a consequence of natural and chemical changes which had taken place over millions of years.
