Sri Lankans across the country welcomed the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and will continue celebrations in a grand scale, by participating in religious, traditional and cultural observances.

Nonagathaya also known as the inauspicious time began at 7.45 am today will continue until 8.33pm.

The dawning of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year was at the auspicious time of 2.09pm.

The auspicious time for preparing of meals began at 2.42pm today, dressed in orange, while facing East.

The auspicious time to start work, engage in transactions and consume meals was at 3.45pm , while wearing orange and facing East.

Meanwhile, anointing of oil will begin on Wednesday the 17th of April at 7.40am, while dressed in green and facing East.

Leaving for professional occupations begins on Thursday the 18th of April at 4.52am, while dressed in green and consuming meals including milk rice and jaggery, while facing East.

The lighting of the hearth at the Sacred Temple of the Tooth in Kandy was conducted by the Diyawadana Nilame, Pradeep Nilanga Dela Bandara.

Meanwhile, our correspondent stated, several devotees, flocked to the sacred city of Anuradhapura with the start of the Nonagathaya, to engage in religious observances.

It was also reported that the citizens of the North, enjoyed the Sinhala and Tamil New year, in a celebratory manner.
