It has been revealed that there are members of three families among the ten victims of the accident where a van collided with a bus opposite the Mahiyangana National School.  

These groups resident at Daubar Place – Batticaloa and Ratnam Road, had gone to Nuwara Eliya on a trip and the accident had taken place while returning.

An individual named Lister Alexander aged 32, his 27 year old wife and four year old twin daughters lost their lives in the accident.

Also, 48-year-old Prince Hedrick, his wife, son and daughter also died in this accident.

Another daughter who sustained injuries is receiving treatment in hospital and the Police Media Spokesman’s office said that a 56-year-old Joseph Ralington and his wife too were among the victims of the accident.

The Police said that meanwhile, apart from those who had travelled in the van, six bus commuters too had sustained injuries.

At the time of the accident, the bus had been plying from Trincomalee to Diyatalawa and the van was being driven from Badulla to Mahiyangana.

When the private bus which had stopped for tea re-commenced its journey the van which had been driven at excessive speed had come and hit it. This was told to the Hiru News Division by some of the bus commuters.

Police suspect that this accident took place when the driver of the van fell asleep at the wheel.

Meantime, 47 individuals have been killed in 35 fatal motor accidents which took place during 6 days from April 11.

The Police Traffic Division said further that another 118 serious motor vehicle accidents were reported.
