Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said a special investigation board has been appointed by the Ministry of Health to carry out investigations into Dr. Segu Siyabdeen Safi.
This doctor who was serving as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital was taken into custody on the allegation that he had been earning assets in a suspicious manner.
It is said that this is the doctor who has been accused of carrying out sterilizations on mothers during caesarian operations.
Police said this doctor was arrested at his home on Weerasinghe Mawatha on the Kurunegala – Kandy road.
Issuing a statement the Police said the doctor was taken into custody to conduct investigations on his assets and as to how he acquired them.
Anyhow, a report was published in a national newspaper last Thursday that a doctor had sterilized 4,000 mothers during caesarian operations and the same newspaper confirming their report said that this accusation was made against this doctor named Siyabdeen Safi.
Dr. Siyabdeen Safi has served in three hospitals for a period of over 13 years as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
He was working at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital at present and served at the Galewela and Dambulla Base Hospitals previously.
He had contested the Parliamentary General Elections in 2015 representing the Kurunegala District through the United National Front.
Engaging in an interview with a newspaper prior to the elections, he had said that he had done 8 caesarian operations within a period of two hours.
He had also confirmed that up to then he had done 8,000 caesarian surgeries.
