Member of the special Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks, Tamil National Alliance, Member of Parliament M. A. Sumanthiran said it has been decided to operate this Committee until the end of its tenure.

He said that accordingly, this Parliamentary Select Committee will meet for a period of three months.

The MP also said that state officials do not have any legal ability to ignore a summons by the Select Committee based on any reason.

The Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks was established on a proposal that was passed in Parliament and it comprises of seven Members representing all Parties in Parliament except for the United People’s Freedom Alliance.

According to Standing Orders of Parliament even if Parliament is postponed, MP M. A. Sumanthiran said that this type of a Select Committee does not get annulled.

This Committee is due to meet again tomorrow at 2pm.

Former IGP N. K. Ilangakoon who is a member of the Committee appointed by the President to inquire into the Easter Sunday attacks has been summoned to the presence of the Select Committee.

Meanwhile, national newspapers reported that the President had not granted approval to the names proposed as Acting Ministers from the UNP in place of the Muslim Ministers who resigned.

The Ministers whose names were thus proposed were Rajitha Senaratne, Malik Samerawickrema and Ranjith Madduma Bandara.

Anyhow, subsequently the Deputy and State Ministers of the relevant Ministries were appointed as Acting Ministers by President. In response to an inquiry, we made from a Senior Minister of the Government he said that the Deputy and State Ministers were appointed as Acting Ministers subsequent to an agreement that was reached.
