According to the readings of the MET department heavy rains of 244 Mili meters had been recorded last night in the Nuwara eliya- Dunkill estate and Laxapana areas.
The MET department noted that a rainfall of 219 mili meters was recorded in the Kudawa area in Ratnapura district.
A slight flooding condition has emerged in several divisional secretariats in the Ratnapura district owing to the rise in water levels in the Kalu Ganga.
Therefore the Disaster Management Center requests the public residing in flood risk areas such as Ratnapura, Elapatha, Kiriella, Ayagama divisional secretariats to evacuate to safer areas.
Meanwhile, the navy informed the fishermen who had set sail from the south, south west and west to immediately return to the nearest fishing harbor last evening.
Owing to the inclement weather a vessel which was in close proximity to the galle harbor had capsized and the navy was able to rescue 9 on board unharmed with the greatest effort.
The existing weather conditions and the extremely rough seas have posed a challenge for rescue operations to be carried out smoothly.
Meanwhile, owing to trees being uprooted by the heavy rainfall and strong winds, power outages were reported in several areas including Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Further a delay in travel along the coastal railway line was also reported due to a fallen tree near the Ragama- Walpola train station. However the railway department took immediate measures to rectify the situation.
In addition, the National Building Research Organization issued a landslide warning to Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Kegalle, Kalutara, Matara and Galle districts yesterday.
Search operations continue to locate the student who was swept away by flood waters owing to the heavy rains in Hatton- Aagarapatha Torrington estate.
Last afternoon two students had been returning home from school when they were swept away by flood waters, resulting in the death of one student.
Duty Meterelogist Kasun Pasquel stated that strong gusty winds up to (70-80) kmph are likely over the island, particularly in Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and North-central provinces and in Trincomalee district.
