President Maithripala Sirisena has called for a special Cabinet meeting.
A spokesman of the President’s office said Cabinet Ministers have already been invited to attend the meeting to be held at the President’s office at 3.00 pm today.
In response to an inquiry we made from several Ministers about this, they said they were not aware of the reason for this Cabinet meeting.
Member of Parliament Chandima Weerakkody questioned the government about the reason for an emergency meeting of the Cabinet to be summoned and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa intervened.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Jathika Hela Urumaya Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has met the Speaker, Karu Jayasuriya yesterday.
At the meeting held at the official residence of the Speaker, the Minister has told him that he is not in agreement with the decision of the Working Committee selecting the Presidential Candidate of the United National Front.
The Minister has said that it should take place in the presence of the 106 members representing the United National Front.
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has requested the Speaker to intervene in this procedure.
At the same time, a discussion between leaders of the United National Front and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to be held this evening.
Minister Mano Ganesan told the Hiru News Division that at this meeting to be held at Temple Trees a lengthy discussion is to be held regarding the Presidential Candidate of the United National Party and the propaganda procedure.
