The apprehension of the 17 year old school boy under suspicion for Seya’s murder has triggered prevailing discussion in society about the apprehension of school children. Following the results of the scientific test which proved a mismatch of the DNA the boy and the father of one were released.  Now a probe is underway as to whether the boy was assaulted when in police custody, as per police orders. Another fact considered is whether adequate evidence was present to justify a suspicion on him. A Teachers’ Association made a complaint to the Commission of Human Rights under these circumstances requesting the introduction of a special set of criteria to be considered in the apprehension of a school kid. Accordingly through Janatha Handa this week we’ll be exploring whether a special set of criteria need be introduced regarding the apprehension of a child.
