The Uma Oya project began in May, 2011 as a multi-purpose development project. The aim was to supply water to villages that are affected by water scarcity.

The Government of Iran is funding the project. The project includes a 120MW hydropower plant.

However, construction of tunnels has created a chaotic environmental damage in the Bandarawela area.

The people who are living in Bandarawela and nearby villages say their drinking water wells have dried up and cracks have appeared in their homes.

On the 28th of June, the area residents staged a harthal in Bandarawela against the project.

Later, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera visited the area to have a first-hand look at the situation and meet the affected people.

He said in a statement, that a solution should be given to this issue as soon as possible as the lives of people in Bandarawela and surrounding areas are in danger.

Should this project, which is inconveniencing the people of Bandarawela and surrounding areas, be stopped ?
