The government took an unexpected decision to ban the social media platforms such as FaceBook, IMO, Viber and WhatsApp in an attempt to contain the 'hate speech' during the infamous Kandy clashes.

The police have been targeted for their inaction with the spread of a 'road rage' incident into a clash between two communities.

The clashes saw houses, religious places and businesses being attacked and destroyed.

Two precious lives were also lost.

Now it is history. What we should do now is to take actions to heal the wounds of mistrust as soon as possible.

The business community of both Sinhala and Muslim communities have a big role to play in this exercise.

Whatever is said now, the hidden reason for these clashes to spread was linked to businesses.

Nobody can hide that fact.

In this context, what did the government achieve by banning social media? In a socio, political aspect, it would gain nothing.

It seems like that the government has forgotten the fact that the social media played a crucial role in bringing them into power.

However, when things did not happen as expected, the masses used the social media platforms to criticize the state machinery.

A number of government Ministers were advocating restrictions on social media.

Then with the onset of the Kandy incidents, the government grabbed the opportunity in both hands and decided to ban the social media, as a temporary measure.

It is true 'hate speech' should be prevented. But should everybody be suffered because of that!

What do you think? Can we create 'social harmony' by interfering with free speech?
