Brendon McCullum-led New Zealand thrashed Australia by 159 runs in the first ODI played at Eden Park, Auckland on Wednesday.

The hosts overshadowed Aussies in all departments of the game as chasing 307 to win, Steve Smith & Co were skittled out for 148. Trent Boult and Matt Henry ripped through Australia's top-order and left them wobbling for 41/6 at one stage.

Mathew Wade (37) and James Faulkner (36) resurrected the innings by adding 79 runs for the sixth-wicket partnership, but after the duo was dismissed, Australia were bowled out in no time.

Boult and Henry were the pick of the bowlers for Black Caps with three wickets apiece.

Earlier, Martin Guptill (90) and McCullum (44) got the hosts off to a good start as they added 79 runs for the opening wicket partnership in 10.5 overs. After losing the wicket of Kane Williamson for a duck, Guptill added a 100-run stand for third wicket with Henry Nicolls (61).

It was Australia's fifth consecutive loss after losing the final ODI and three T20Is against MS Dhoni -led India in the recently concluded tour at home.
