The United Arab Emirates have won the Asia Cup main draw berth as they beat Oman by 71 runs in their last qualifying round match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday. After winning all three matches of the Asia Cup Qualifiers, UAE will now join the hosts Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan in the main draw of the Micromax T20 Asia Cup 2016, which will roll onto the ground from February 24, when Bangladesh lock horns with India in the tournament opener.
Despite winning their previous two matches, UAE could have faced stiff net run-rate equation had they lost the match, as Afghanistan won against Hong Kong by 66 runs earlier in the day. But with dominating Oman on their way to qualifying for the main event, Rohan Mustafa’s side was also able to avoid any potential confusion.
After losing the toss, UAE were sent in to bat first. And then thanks to a fifty from opener Mohammad Khalim and another 40-odd knock from Mohammad Osman, UAE posted a good total of 172 for 6. The score UAE had collected on the board later proved too much for Oman, as they were restricted to 101 for the loss of 8 wickets in their 20 overs.
UAE will face the hosts Bangladesh on February 26, while their other matches are against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India on February 25, 29 and March 3 respectively. All of the matches will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The final of the competition will take place on March 6.
