Men should be awarded more prize money than women, Novak Djokovic said after his win against Milos Raonic in the men’s final.
He added women deserved the money they got but men should fight for more because their game attracted more viewers.
His comments comes following a controversial statement by chief executive of Indian Wells, Raymond Moore, who said the Women’s Tennis Association was a “lucky organisation” which “rides on the coattails” of the men.
“If I was a lady player, I’d go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport. They really have,” he said at BNP Paribas final between Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams.
However, Moore later apologized for his comments.
