Spain’s Rafael Nadal produced a spirited comeback to overcome American Sam Querrey 6-4 6-2 on Thursday (May 5) and progress to the Madrid Open quarter-finals.
After wins earlier in the day for Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, the pressure was on Nadal in front of passionate home support to move into the later stages of a competition he has won on four occasions.
Nadal, on good form following back-to-back tournament wins at Monte Carlo and Barcelona, is one victory away from a record 50th clay court title.
He was made to work hard by Querrey, who at one point had a break point with a chance to move 5-1 up in the first set.
However, in the end Nadal battled back, winning seven games in a row, to defeat the 28 year-old in straight sets.
