Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has backed misfiring top order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne after he finished the Test series against England without a single half-century. Thirimanne managed just 87 runs in five innings with a top score of 22. Despite all the hype of Thirimanne’s superior technique and fine temperament, he was an utter failure as Sri Lanka lost the series 2-0.
Captain Angelo Mathews said yesterday, that Kusal Mendis' batting and Rangana Herath's "all-round" performances constituted the positives from the 2 nil Test series defeat against England. Spinner Rangana Herath had better returns with the bat scoring 109 runs in five innings with a top score of 61.
Thirimanne’s statistics in fact are shocking. In his last 33 Test innings, the left-hander has managed just two half-centuries. He continues to get the backing of the management, however and before establishing his place in the side even had a short stint as Sri Lanka’s vice-captain.
