Two middle distance runners Gayanthika Abeyrathne and Sanjeewa Lakmal secured a Gold Medal each in the 1,500m while long jumper Amila Jayasiri and Rumeshika Rathnayake won Bronze Medals on the opening day of the Thailand Open Athletics Championship which began at the Thammasat University Stadium on Monday (04).

Abeyrathne who won the Silver Medal at the South Asian Games (SAG) was competing at her first international championship since then when she secured the Gold while Sanjeewa Lakmal who also won the Silver Medal in the 1,500m at the SAG won the Gold Medal in the Men's 1,500m.

Meanwhile, Lionel Samarajeewa was the first to win a medal for Sri Lanka when he came second in the Men's 10,000m final with a time of 32 minutes and 25 seconds.

In addition long jumper Amila Jayasiri leaped 7.56m to win the Bronze Medal in the Men's long jump final while Rumeshika Rathnayake too had to be satisfied with a Bronze Medal in the 100m.

Dilip Ruwan won the Men's 400m heats with a time of 47.06s and the semi-final with a time of 47.33s to advance into the final and won a Gold medal.
