Sri Lanka's interim coach Nic Pothas distanced himself from the controversial non-selection of middle-order batsman Dinesh Chandimal for the ongoing five-match ODI series against India after his team suffered a humiliating nine-wicket defeat with more than 21 overs to spare on Sunday.

Chandimal, Sri Lanka's best ODI batsman in the last two years and the Test captain, was overlooked for the home series against Zimbabwe as well.

However, he was expected to return for the series against India at his customary number four position.

Instead Sri Lanka's selection panel, has given Chandimal's position to ODI captain Upul Tharanga while drafting in Chamara Kapugedera to number six, who will complete 100 ODIs in the second game against India at Pallekele, and has only eight half-centuries.

Pothas attended the post-match media briefing and ducked the question relating to Chandimal when he said it was a question that the selectors had to answer.

The Chandimal question has been hotly debated in Colombo with several former captains, including Arjuna Ranatunga, questioning his snubbing.
