The second ODI between Sri Lanka and India to be played in Pallekele on Thursday (24) will be crucial for Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Sri Lankan opener Niroshan Dickwella.

Kohli needs only 45 runs behind South African skipper Faf Du Plessis and 16 runs behind England's Joe Root to become the highest scorer in this calendar year.

Kohli has now scored 769 runs in 14 matches this year while Du Plessis has scored 814 and Root 785.

Meanwhile, Dickwella has the possibility of becoming the fastest batsman to score 1000 ODI runs. He has so far scored 831 runs in 19 innings.

Sir Viv Richards reached his ODI 1000 run mark in his 21st innings.
