South Africa's ODI captain AB de Villiers has stepped down saying Faf du Plessis has been doing a great job with test and T20 sides.

De Villiers said he took this decision bearing in mind the performances of Faf du Plessis as a captain.

The star cricketer said he would be available for all three formats of the game from mid-October onwards.

After a long injury lay off, De Villiers returned to international action in January and captained South Africa in the Champions Trophy but they were unable to make it out of the group stage.

33-year-old, De Villiers has so far played 222 one-day internationals scoring 9319 runs with an average of 53.55.
