Mathews to play as a batsman during Indian Tests

Sri Lanka team management in India says that former Skipper Angelo Mathews will not bowl during the 3-match Test series with India which starts on Thursday.
Sri Lanka's bowling coach Rumesh Ratnayake revealed that the former captain will not be bowling in the Test series. "Angelo comes in as a batsman".
"He has not bowled in a Test match for a while. I don't think he will bowl here. We consider him more as a white-ball bowler and will look to bowl him in the ODIs only." He added.
Mathews could not take part in the recent Pakistan series due to a calf injury and he did not bowl even during the home 3-match series against India in August-September.
The Sri Lanka team management, which is monitoring Mathews' workload over the last few months, will not risk Mathews who has suffered a string of injuries over the past 12 months.
With Mathews not available to bowl, Sri Lanka will have to rethink about the crucial all-rounder's slot.
However, Ratnayake felt they have good options in Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva and Roshan Silva to fill that role.
The 30-year-old is one of the two only surviving members of the Sri Lanka Test side which toured India in 2009, where the visitors lost the 3-match series 2 nil.
The other is Rangana Herath.
Mathews has played 69 Tests scoring 4718 runs with 7 centuries and 27 fifties.
