Former tennis world number one Serena Williams has revealed she almost died in September, giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner revealed that giving birth "sparked a slew of health complications".

While the c section delivery of the baby went smoothly, what followed just 24 hours after giving birth were six days of uncertainty.

She said complications began with a pulmonary embolism.

Her first C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing she endured as a result.

She was returned to surgery, where the doctors found a large haematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in her abdomen.

Williams, said after returning home, she was bedridden for 6 weeks after giving birth.
