The first match of the ICC world test championship test series, the ashes between England and Australia began yesterday in Birmingham England. 

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. They were bowled out for 284 in their first Innings.

Steven Smith, who rejoined the team in the last world cup after serving a one-year ban, scored 144 and no other player could score even a half-century. Peter Siddle made 44 runs in a 88 run partnership for the 9th wicket with Steven Smith.

Stuart Broad took 5 wickets for 86 runs while Chris Woakes took 3 wickets for 58 runs.
