Both openers Martin Guptil and Brendon McCullum were out for 4 runs each off the bowling Nuwan Kulasekara and Shaminda Eranga.
Captain Ross Taylor then resurrected the innings with a steady partnership for the 3rd wicket with Kane Williamson.
Ross Taylor was unbeaten on 119 runs and recorded his 8th test century and Kane Willimanson was on 95 runs.
New Zealand were on 223 runs for the loss of 2 at stumps.
