South Africa's new Test captain Hashim Amla has returned to the top 3 of the ICC Test rankings for players, while his opposite number in the recently concluded series, Angelo Mathews, has achieved a career-high ranking.

Amla, who led South Africa to No 1 in the ICC team rankings with a 1-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka last week, scored an unbeaten 139 and 25 in Colombo which earned him 34 ratings points.

Mathews extended his strong batting form in 2014 with scores of 63 and 63 not out to move up four places to sixth position.

Mathews' team-mate and former captain Mahela Jayawardene - who will bow out of Tests after the upcoming series against Pakistan - was named Man of the Match at Colombo's SSC for his first-innings 165, and this also earned him four places upwards to 14th place.
