JVP gains the power of Deniyaya Kotapola Multipurpose Co-operative Society

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has lost the authority in the Deniyaya Kotapola Multipurpose Co-operative Society, one of the largest Multipurpose Co-operative Societies in the country.

In the previous elections, SLPP won the Co-operative Union elections with a percentage of about 90%.

This Multipurpose Co-operative Society has about 50,000 members.

This time, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has gained the majority to appoint members to the Deniyaya Kotapola Multipurpose Co-operative Society.

It is reported that the 'Kotapola Co-operative Protection Coalition' which was supported by the JVP has won 48 seats and they have been able to easily establish their power including the chairmanship of the council.

However, no final calculation has been made as to what the Board of Directors will represent.

It is reported that the group backed by the SLPP has suffered a major setback in this election and they have been able to win only 35 seats.

Accordingly, anti-SLPP groups have 65 seats in the 100-member Kotapola Multipurpose Co-operative Society General Assembly.

Nipuna Ranawaka, Member of Parliament is the organizer of the SLPP in the Deniyaya electorate which belongs to Kotapola.

He is the son of a Rajapaksa sister and is also the Chairman of the Matara District Development Committee.
