Lankan refugee arrested on rape charge

A 25-year-old Sri Lankan refugee was arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 64-year-old Dalit woman in Kanyakumari in India on last Sunday.

According to Indian police, M. Karan alias Jayant of the refugee camp in Perumalpuram raped the aged woman of Narikulam Colony in Kottaram closed by Kanyakumari on Sunday afternoon in a isolated place while she was rearing goats.

The woman was provided first aid at a private hospital after she was hospitalized in Kottaram and later moved to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital on Sunday night.

Police have registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 294 B (using abusive language), 506 (1) (criminal intimidation), and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

The arrested person was jailed in judicial custody after being produced at a Magistrate Court, police sources said. (The Hindu)
