An EU delegation is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka to assess the steps taken by the country to lift the EU ban on Sri Lankan fisheries products.

Visiting Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera who met European Union Environment, Ocean and Fisheries Affairs Commissioner at Brussels in Belgium has discussed about the means to lift the EU ban.

The EU delegation has told minister Samaraweera that it would take several months to lift the prevailing ban on Sri Lankan fisheries products.

However the EU delegation has praised the measures taken by Sri Lanka in order to get the EU ban lifted.

The EU had informed Sri Lanka about its decision to ban the import of country’s fisheries products, and it also gave 3 months period before implement the ban.

Accordingly, the EU suspended import of Sri Lanka fisheries products on January 15th.

Sri Lanka is the second largest exporter of fisheries products to the EU.
