President Maithripala Sirisena says that he did not take on the Presidency with the intention of dividing the country but rather to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.

The President said that while in the past, several duties had been assigned to him, he would fulfill the responsibilities handed over to him, according to his conscience, on behalf of the people.

The President said so while participating at a function held at the Hambantota International Conference Hall yesterday to celebrate UPFA general secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera’s 25 years in politics.
