President instructs to hold Independent probe into death of two Jaffna University students

The President has directed the relevant officials to conduct an impartial and independent investigation into the death of two Jaffna University students and submit a report to the court.

Releasing a communiqué, President Maithripala Sirisena has noted that he was deeply saddened to hear the death of the two university students in Jaffna.

He also assured that the investigations will be carried out without any interruptions.

In addition, the communiqué released by the President noted that the President has decided to pay a compensation to the parents of the victims.

Meanwhile, Jaffna Magistrate S. Satheeskaran today ordered to remand the five police officers who were arrested in connection with the incident, for two weeks.

A sub inspector, sergeant, two constables and a driver are among the remanded officers.

Jaffna Magistrate S. Satheeskaran ordered to place the five police officers in remand custody at Anuradhapura Prison, and to produce them before the court again on Monday.

The Post mortem of the two Jaffna University students, who died while travelling on a motor cycle, was conducted last evening, revealing that the rider of the motor cycle sustained gunshot injuries.
