Sri Lankan housemaids are illegally auctioned and sold in an Omani town for a price below OMR 1500, Times of Oman reports.

The illegal trade is taking place without the knowledge of embassies.

However, Sri Lankan maids should be registered at the Foreign Employment Bureau and inform relevant embassies before going abroad to work.

An official at the Sri Lankan embassy said around 70 cases where reported where local housemaids were recruited to Oman illegally.

In addition to Sri Lankan maids, those from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Philippines and African countries can also be bought.
