Be careful of persisting persistent cold and fever- Health Officials

Seek immediate medical treatment if a patient suffers from persistent cold and fever as, Health Officials urged.

They stated that there is a risk of influenza virus to spread due to the prevailing weather conditions.

The warning comes after three patients died of Influenza H1N1in ward 69 of the Kandy Teaching Hospital. The ward was sealed immediately afterwards and reopened following sterilization to treat influenza patients.

Five more patients, suspected of being infected by the virus, have been receiving treatment.

Kandy Teaching Hospital Director Dr.R.M.S.K. Ratnayake said that necessary steps were taken to control the situation.

He asked the public to avoid bringing children to see patients at the hospital.

He said children, pregnant mothers, elderly people and people suffering from diseases such as kidney patients are most vulnerable for the virus.

The Director added that hospital staff and visitors have been given instructions on how to protect themselves and prevent further spread of the virus.
