Expansion and carpeting of the Katunayaka International Airport runway is being carried out in rapid progression these days, our reporter said.

A construction company registered with Civil Aviation Authority of China began renovation work at a cost of US 48.6 dollars on 2017 – 01 – 06.

The runway of the airport was originally 1840 meters in length in 1963 when it was constructed and in 1986 it was expanded to be 3350 meters in length and 60 meters breadth.

Since then 30 years have elapsed and the International Airport Operations Auditing Institute after carrying out a survey in 2016 proposed that the runway of airport requires a complete renovation.

The expansion of the runway has been duly completed and the carpeting of it has commenced since last 05th.

Presently an area of about 200 meters is daily being carpeted and the airport authorities have said that the runway could be opened before the scheduled opening date falling on 2017 – 04 – 07, our reporter further added.
