A group of farmers launched a protest this morning in Embilipitiya town demanding compensation for the damages caused to crops as a result of the drought.

They demand authorities to pay Rs. 50,000 for an acre.

Over 1000 farmers from Hambantota and Ratnapura districts joined the protest representing the Walawa Mahaweli Zone.

Meanwhile, residents in Dambulla protested against the move by the government to acquire land. The lands were acquired in 1982 for development purposes, however they were given to the private sector as the development projects did not take place, protesters claim.

Below are photographs taken at the Dambulla protest.
