The GMOA threatened to take tough trade union action in the future unless the minister in charge immediately gazettes the minimum standards for medical education.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Navinda Soyza said that setting up of state, private or semi governmental medical colleges is the duty of a government.

Addressing a media conference held in Colombo today, Dr. Soyza said the sole aspiration of the GMOA is to ensure such institutions produce quality medical practitioners.

Addressing the media, GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said that current health minister Rajitha Senarathna, even in his capacity as an MP, disturbed the efforts to introduce standards in medical education.

Meanwhile, our correspondent stated that protests have been organized at several government hospitals throughout the country.
