More challenges against hydropower, water to be released until end of March

The Power and Renewable Energy Ministry states that the generation of hydro power, has become a challenge due to the prevailing dry weather condition.

Ministry spokesman Sulakshana Jayawardana stated that water reservoirs can generate power only for another 60 days.

Meanwhile, water levels of other reservoirs, belonging to the Irrigation Department have also reduced drastically.

The Department stated the water level of all Mahaweli reservoirs have remained at 50% to 30%.

However, Irrigation Department’s Director General Saman Weerasinghe said that the department expects to continuously provide water for agricultural purposes.

In addition, the Chairman of the Water Supply and Drainage board M. Anzar said that the supply of drinking water supply will continue without interruption.

Meanwhile, The Director Forecast of the Met Department Anusha Warnasuriya said rains can be excepted in several  parts of the island in the next few days.
