Palitha Thewarapperuma does it again

Sunday, 07 January 2018 - 23:12

The Inspector General of Police, Pujith Jayasundera addressing a programme said today (Jan. 07) that police officers should carry out their duties independently.

However, an incident was reported in Borella today which would definitely challenge the statement of the IGP.

Here, the Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma was seen obstructing the duties of a police officer.

In this incident, a police officer who was on duty at the convention held at the Campbell Park under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe confiscated the licence of a motorist for to not wearing seat belts, parking the vehicle obstructing traffic and disobeying police orders.

Then Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma reprimanded the police officer and recovered the license by force.

It is, in fact, questionable with such incidents whether police officers can carry out their duties independently as stated by the IGP.
