IGP orders probe into death of youth at Police cell

Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera has handed over the investigation in relation to the alleged suicide of a detainee by hanging at a cell in Pettah Police to the DIG at Police Headquarters.

The IGP has also asked to take stern disciplinary action against the police officers who were on duty at the time of the incident.

The 17-year-old youth who was a resident of Matale had committed suicide by hanging using his clothes inside the police cell early morning today (Jan. 11).

He was arrested by police last night in Bastian Mawatha for allegedly having a haul of cannabis in his possession.
