20-year jail term for 20,000 bribe

Colombo High Court today (Feb. 01) sentenced a police constable for a 20-year jail term after he was found guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from a resident of Dematagoda.

The police officer had accepted the bribe from a resident of Dematagoda to avoid legal action being taken for having mosquito breeding grounds in his garden.

Our correspondent said that the accused was also asked to pay back the money he accepted as a fine and his jail term will be completed in 10 years.
